In space, there are no signposts. Yet NASA astronaut Sally Ride, in 1983 the first American woman in space, managed to successfully complete several space missions. During the mission, which included the crew putting two satellites into orbit and conducting pharmaceutical experiments, Ride operated the Canadarm, which she co-designed.
